The word 'Adolescence' is derived from the Latin word, 'Adolescere', which carries the meaning 'to grow up'. Adolescence is the developmental period of transition from childhood to adulthood which includes biological, cognitive and social changes (Santrock, 2006). Although the age range of adolescence differs by cultural and historical circumstance, the beginning is typically obvious by the onset of puberty and the completion is related to the full assumption of adult roles (Bronk, 2011). Adolescence is also an important period in the life span of an individual when he/she enters a new era of life, fraught with problems. Adolescence is generally defined in reference to a period of years. The World Health Organization (W.H.O)(Paediatr Child Health, 2003) has defined adolescence as a period between the ages of 10-19 years.Adolescence plays an important role in an individual's life, as it forms a crucial developmental period. It stands as a transition between childhood and adulthood (Keller, Cusick & Courtney, 2007).During the stage of adolescence, the individual undergoes rapid physical changes such as an increase in height, weight and the development of secondary sex characteristics, all of which make the adolescent feel that he/she has reached mature adulthood.
